The Certificate of Competence in Management Consulting is a seventeen module, 120 credit hours program whose primary objective is to provide you with an opportunity to become familiar with the typical phases in a consulting project The course is relevant to those 1) who are specifically interested in consulting careers and / or 2) whose current or future jobs involve staff consulting or line management using consultants. These phases include: selling a project, entering the client firm, gathering data, diagnosing issues, implementing solutions and leaving. In addition to discussing these phases in class, we will discuss how similarly, and how differently, consultants work with their clients. We will also study the functional specialty areas in which most consultants practice. We conclude the course with discussions of ethical issues, career concerns and expert witnessing of consultants.

 

The course provides extensive knowledge about the management consulting industry and an appreciation of the latest business challenges. Trainees can gain an understanding of consulting techniques and methodologies and develop a wide range of transferable skills. They can learn theories and practices to diagnose problems in an organisation and develop the knowledge and skills to make recommendations for solving those problems. It is a comprehensive, structured program that provides trainees with key management and supervisory skills and techniques to enable them to operate as first-line managers. It facilitates trainees' development of a wide range of management competencies, from effective recruitment and selection to leading and developing individuals and teams.

 

Trainees can focus on developing skills that are useful for a future career as a management (i.e. project management consultant, M&E consultant, organizational development consultant) or as an internal management practitioner in any organisation. The program provides a detailed understanding of the consulting industry, the way it works, its dominant players, key success factors, and also the management issues that drive it. Trainees will enhance their knowledge as to how and when to use the consulting tools and methodologies, how to write a consulting proposal, and the other key skills required to be a successful management consultant. This makes the program very attractive to current graduates, professionals and executives wanting to improve their overall consulting acumen and to executives in transition wanting to start a consulting career.
